It’s a dilemma isn’t it? How to find the time to listen to all your records while constantly adding to your collection. You delude yourself like the rest of us. You imagine scenarios where you’ll trade away that import copy of an album you already own (two copies actually), only to find yourself fondling that record again at the end of a long work day. Admiring it. After a few cocktails you’re convinced you’re hearing better imaging with a wider soundstage and deeper transparency. Whatever that is. At some point you’ll read an article on minimalism and swiftly tell friends and family that one day you’ll pare down your collection if for no other reason than to thumb your nose at consumerism. And yet deep down you wonder. Maybe you’re incapable of downsizing your collection. Then the worry sets in. Are you a hoarder? A weirdo? What’ll happen to your records when you die? You can’t allow yourself to think about it. It’s too painful. Too depressing. Some snot-nosed neighbor kid with no real understanding of the dotted line that exists between Charlie Parker and Charlie Watts is never going to end up with your records. No way.
In many ways the solution to the depression you’ve sunk into is actually the cause of the condition itself. You know it. Your friend with the comic book collection (and body odor) gets it. We get it.
It’s time to get back out there. Cheer yourself up. Dig through the crates. Get flipper’s finger. After all, what will become of American culture if you don’t find that deep groove, Plastylite “ear”, mono pressing before some greasy-haired, mouth-breather ends up with it. IF he’s got kids they’ll just toss his records into the garbage after he keels over. No, better for you to get it. And hang onto it until you eventually give the entire collection to one of the many local Smithsonian museums that dot the countryside.
Before you think we’re just trying to pry open your wallet remember this - the only guy crazier than a record collector is a record store owner. After all, he’s got the same disease. It’s just more acute.
